Homeowners Insurance Policy And Flood Insurance

All your homeowners insurance policy protects you from is water damage, which is very different from flood damage. In some ways, is the very opposite of flood coverage. That is, coverage for water damage only covers the damage caused by water in situations where the water is not touch the ground. For example, your home owner insurance policy may protect you in case water pipes or open drains cause water to flood into your home. Your policy will also generally cover you if heavy rains or storms smash through windows or other openings to your home, causing floods inside the home.

Some insurance policies also cover flood related problems which occur after a flood strikes. For example, if explosions, fires, theft, or other types of losses occur as a direct or indirect result of a flood, you may be able to make some claims. On some home owner insurance policies, for example, you may be covered if robbers steal your personal property once you've evacuated your home during a flood. In such an event, though, the actual damage caused by the floods would still be your responsibility.

Contact your insurance provider today. Find out what types of water damage protection you have and find out how much flood coverage costs in your area. You'll be pleased to learn that flood coverage does not overlap with water coverage. That is, if you have water damage coverage on your current home insurance policy, flood coverage will complement that's coverage by covering you more. You will not simply be duplicating your coverage or paying for coverage that has been insured.

Sadly, many homeowners do not consider flood insurance until the worst happens. As a result, even homes in areas where flooding is common tend to be underinsured when it comes to home flood insurance. Every home can be affected by flash floods and heavy rain, so this type of insurance is important if you wish to protect your home.
