National Flood Insurance Program

The national flood insurance program (NFIP) refers to a program that facilitates the property owners in participating communities to purchase insurance protection against losses from flooding. This insurance is basically intended to offer an insurance option in aiding disasters to meet the soaring costs of fixing the damages in buildings and their contents as a result of flood.

An agreement between local communities and the federal government is what required for the participation in the NFIP. The federal government declares if a community will adopt and enforce floodplain management ordinance, it will make flood insurance available within the community as a financial protection against flood losses. The mitigation division of Federal Emergency Management agency is responsible for the management of NFIP and other components of the program.

There is a myth that people those who live in hills and other high raised areas do not require flood insurance. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) demystifies this belief by strongly disagreeing with it.
