Manufactured Housing

In recent years the term "manufactured housing" has been applied to dwellings more typically characterized as "trailer houses" or "mobile homes." The distinction between the two types of construction is an important one for insurance purposes so that the correct policy is obtained for the home in question.

Applying the term manufactured housing to mobile homes has been an effort on the part of the mobile home industry to upgrade the image of the products they sell, but the phrase "manufactured housing" more traditionally refers to modular construction. In this instance portions of the home are assembled at manufacturing facilities, trucked to the home site, and affixed to both a foundation and to adjoining modules.

For insurance, a mobile home is required as a unique subset of residences and is often defined as a factory-built structure of a minimum of eight feet in length constructed wholly on its own chassis.
